First results of the NEXPLORER survey

25. September 2020, NEXPO Team

What defines Switzerland? What values hold the nation together? The NEXPLORER values survey launched on 1 August 2020 has been met with very pleasing interest. Within the first few weeks, over 3,000 people from all parts of the country have already taken part in the project.

The first exciting trends are taking shape: the evaluation of the data collected so far shows, among other things, that in the year of the coronavirus pandemic, Swiss people primarily want security and stability (65%) for their country, but also fairness and solidarity (55%).

Loyalty and community spirit are more prominent amongst the older generation, while amongst younger people the sense of “Us” is more strongly reflected through equality.

An analysis of demographic groups shows that the sense of “Us” is not disappearing between the older and the younger generation, but is instead undergoing a transformation. Loyalty and community spirit are more prominent amongst the older generation, while amongst younger people the sense of “Us” is more strongly reflected through equality. Power and freedom make up the “Me” pole.

While those surveyed from rural areas are more rooted in the “Here” pole, urban residents are more aligned with “There”.

One contrast between the genders stands out in particular. The connection to nature is much stronger amongst the women surveyed than the men.

It is also clear that the Swiss crosses of all the groups surveyed are much more similar than different overall. This reveals that despite all their differences, people’s views on Switzerland and its values are actually very similar.

NEXPLORER is not simply a survey, but like NEXPO is a process that invites participants to continuously grapple with their own values. This is producing increasingly detailed findings about the attitudes, desires and dreams of the Swiss population.
