SITE VISIT VI: «Lingotto» Luegisland

19. November 2021, NEXPO Team

A warm invitation to the sixth SITE VISIT! In Schwamendingen we will visit the former AMAG headquarters. Due to the "enclosure", the building with its lively history of interim uses will be demolished in the middle of next year.

SITE VISIT VI
"Lingotto" Luegisland, Luegislandstrasse 105, 8051 Zurich
10.12.2021, 2:30 - 4:30 pm

The "Lingotto" Luegisland is one of the last dinosaurs of its kind. Due to the fundamental reconstruction of the neighbourhood by the "Einhausung Schwamendingen", the large concrete building will be demolished. Since AMAG moved out, numerous interim uses have found their way into its shell. A walk takes us through the doomed building.

A film by Meghan Rolvien takes us through the doomed building.

"Lingotto" Luegisland: The City of Zurich's interim use for the cultural and creative industries is coming to an end. The 12,000m2 of the building, which was used by AMAG as its headquarters until 2012, is still being used on an interim basis at favourable conditions. The "Schwamendingen enclosure" will soon enclose the motorway in front of the building. The former car centre, which is owned by an AMAG heiress, will be replaced by a residential building connected to the newly constructed elevated park.

About SITE VISIT: The new series of excursions and discussions extends NEXPO's research on living together in Switzerland in the 21st century. Rapid social change not only brings technological progress, but forces us to reflect on our built social environment. SITE VISIT is an attempt at a playful re-examination of spaces. We take the "Lingotto" Luegisland as an occasion to think about our public life in the future.

About NEXPO: The initiative of the ten largest Swiss cities for a new national exhibition is called NEXPO - the new Expo, because it will take on a completely new form: it will be sustainable, future-oriented, decentralised and take place throughout Switzerland. It will not be an Expo on a defined and fenced-in site. It will connect cultural initiatives throughout Switzerland, in all language regions, in cities, agglomerations and in the countryside. It will build bridges between the centre and the periphery, form a nationwide network and create meeting places.
